Photo Diary Part X

Helensburgh Pirate Sub!

If there's one thing we love apart from the subcrawl, it's pirates. Splicing the mainbrace, walking the plank, with a Jolly Roger and a Dead Man's Chest - what could be better.

So imagine our delight when we got these photos from our correspondent Mitch from Helensburgh, showing him and his mates in full buccaneering regalia as they bade farewell to their pal "Cider Bill" on the eve of his joining the Army. I say delight, but there's also some jealousy in there - we wish we'd thought of it first!

Quite remarkably, on looking at the photos we realised we couldn't confidently I.D. a good half of the pubs involved, so until someone puts us right you will have to make do with best guesses.

Meet the subcrawling pirates: Captain Artois (with parrot Stella); Pistol Pad Lock; Pirate Camp McBain; Sea-Dodging Stoney; Cider Bill McCoist; Pirate Safeguard. We think this is in the posh bit of The Laurieston (we normally go in the snug) - answers on a postcard please if we're wrong!

Rather appropriately, for their West Street stop the crew chose to visit The Lord Nelson.

Again we're not sure but we think this is The Kensington

On safer ground here - we're pretty sure this is outside the Stadium Bar. Notice the guy on the right who has obviously been forced out the door at the end of a cutlass

In the tunnel at Kelvinhall - doubtless planning to make some poor soul walk the plank onto the railway lines

In keeping with the nautical theme we like to think this might be The Liquid Ship, but to be honest we haven't a clue

Not sure quite what was happening at St Georges Cross, but we like to think the guy on the floor is doing some scrimshawing (that's ivory-whittling to all the land-lubbers out there)

At Buchanan Street, possibly in Dow's. A true pirate is never happier than with a flintlock in one hand and a rum in the other . . .
