Kelvinbridge

Yet another part of Glasgow that takes its name from the River Kelvin. You are still in the hinterland of Glasgow University and a lot of the shops reflect this (muesli stores next to extreme sports gear retailers). This stop is also famous for the 'Escalator of Doom'.

The Stop

Be afraid, be very afraid... The Escalator of Doom (right). Escalator

The station sits well below the Great Western Road where it has its main exit. To reach the road you have to traverse two large escalators, the second, and larger, of which has acquired for itself the moniker of the 'Escalator of Doom'. The tradition is for SUB-bers to run up the downside of the second escalator. No mean feat after a day of boozing and particularly if you're the wrong side of thirty. It is not mandatory and in fact can be quite dangerous if you are a fat bastard.

To get to the pub from the stop turn right at the top of the Escalator of Doom (N.B. Hubbards and the other pubs near the stop can all be easily found by turning left here), first shop you come to is BackStreet Pine. Then continue down to the end of the block past a number of shops and then turn right again onto Park Road. Walk down past the Vespa showroom until after a couple of minutes you come to the Doublet.

The Pubs

Doublet pub Doublet Bar 74 Park Rd G4 9JF Tel. 0141 334 1982)

The Doublet is a cosy wee traditional Glasgow pub. Small bar on the right as you walk in and tables on the left with seating against the wall. You can just about swing a cat in here. The bar tends to be busy (but then it is always eight-ish on a Saturday night when we get in) and tend to be more so when a troupe of SUB-bers squeezes in. Good selection of beer although nothing for the Real Ale fraternity (shame). The floor in the Doublet slopes slightly (...okay, noticeably!) down at the far end which means that any spilt beer collects in a puddle at that end. During one Sub we had to throw a lifebelt to one of our troupe who had fallen in.

Other Pubs: The "World Record" subcrawl and its follow-up both included a visit to Hubbards (508 Great Western Road, G12 8EL. Tel. 0141 334 2995) at this stop. On a recent subcrawl expedition we decided to take the plunge and found ourselves in a large multi-area bar. The beer selection is better than most (including the gorgeous Kronenbourg Blanc). However we found it a slightly soulless place, with nothing particularly outstanding about it: even a bit dull perhaps? The crappy floor reinforces the impression that this is little more than a slightly superior chain bar.

Notes and Anecdotes

On occasion, back at the "E.O.D.", we find that some English visitors confuse the first escalator with the second. These tend, on seeing the first but not the second, to pour scorn on Scottish manhood and then race up the first only to fall on their knees weeping as the second looms into view. Some of the local kids like to sit on the hand rail/belt thing and slide down. They can do this without any problem because they tend to have small arses. On one Sub recently a SUB-ber known as 'Jabba' attempted to emulate these kids' antics. Not for nothing is this person called Jabba (yes he is in fact a big Star Wars fan). Within seconds of starting his slide his big wobbly arse wobbled off the belt and he fell down the E.O.D. He very near broke his leg on the steel steps. Oh, how we laughed.
