Cowcaddens
Anyone remember "Thingummyjig"? No? You jammy sod. . .
Anyway, this part of Cowcaddens is the dingy hinterland to glorious Sauchiehall Street.
| The Stop |
| When leaving the station make sure you take the right hand entrance or else you will be heading back towards St Georges Cross. Continue right until you come to an underpass. Go through this and turn left up the path between the road and the flats. At the top of the incline turn right, at this point you will see a multi-storey car park and hotel off to the left. Walk on down towards Sauchiehall Street and Macintosh's Bar is in the block of shops on your right. |
| The Pubs |
| To countless numbers of SUB-bers, MacIntosh's Bar is like the glimpse of the lighthouse light from a storm-tossed boat. The bar and area around it look as if the storm has preceded you. | |
| Macintosh's Bar (95-97 Cambridge Street, G3 6RU. Tel. 0141 332 5298) | |
| Good-sized Bar and Lounge. Usually empty when we have been there, but then it is usually about 22:30 when we arrive. Suggest you stick to the lounge as there is always free seating in there and you will need it if you have been boozing for the last ten hours. The décor is Glasgow pub standard (i.e. could do with a clean up), and they sell the usual range of drinks. This bar is in marked contrast to the bars on Sauchiehall Street only a minute's walk away. Those bars make an effort to attract people whereas Macintosh's seems to have a 'take it or leave it' attitude. We have always found this something of a puzzle given its location. | |
| Notes and Anecdotes |
|
Watch your time. The subway closes up at 23:00 (check out the SPT site for exact times) and if you stay too long you will find you can not complete the subcrawl, disaster of disasters! Watch yourself. People have been known to die in Macintosh's. A week before one of our SUBs someone was murdered in the lounge (not that we're trying to put you off the subcrawl altogether, you understand). Damned inconsiderate if you ask us. "Stramash at Cowcaddens" We recently received an email from "Gordy" with another cautionary tale about this stop: "Me and a few mates did the crawl about a year ago now . . . the idea was we would get a picture taken outside either every tube station or a pub! Well... we started at Buchanan Street and went south first of all... the bevvy was going nicely and then we got to Cowcaddens - the last stop - and tried to go for the all-out best picture of the night, so... We decided that the best way to do this would be to get a pic of us all on top of the roof of the tube station. So my mates got on the roof and I was to take the pic. The photo was about to be taken when about 3 or 4 SPT staff came herding out of the station to get my mates down... eventually they got them down and in the midst of it all my mate Mick lost his mobile phone and the three of us got barred from Cowcaddens underground station." Gordy, we salute you and your pals. And we'll let you know if we ever find Mick's mobile! |
